Allen Jones ist ein britischer Künstler, der der Pop Art zuzuordnen ist. Er lebt und arbeitet heute in London. Wenige Künstler sind trotz seines hohen Bekanntheitsgrades so umstritten wie der Pop-Art-Pionier Allen Jones. Der britische Künstler hat viele ikonische Werke geschaffen und bleibt eine kontroverse Figur in der Kunstwelt mit einer starken internationalen Präsenz.
1955 bis 1961 studiert Allen Jones Malerei und Lithografie am Hornsey College of Art in London. Die Unterrichtsmethode beruft sich hauptsächlich auf Klees «Pädagogisches Skizzenbuch». Er reist in die Provence und nach Paris, wo er vor allem von Delaunay beeindruckt ist. 1959 besucht er das Musée Fernand Léger in Biot. Er studiert bis 1960 am Royal College of Art zusammen mit R. B. Kitaj, Peter Phillips, David Hockney und Derek Boshier. Schon am Ende des Studienjahres musste er das College verlassen. Zwischen 1961 und 1963 unterrichtet Allen Jones Lithografie am Croydon College of Art und 1964 Zeichnen an der Chelsea School of Art.
Sein Werk der frühen sechziger Jahre ist stark psychologisch ausgerichtet, angeregt von der Lektüre Nietzsches, Freuds und Jungs. 1963 erhält er den Prix des Jeunes Artistes auf der Biennale von Paris. 1964 zieht er nach New York. Er unternimmt eine ausgedehnte Reise durch die USA. In New York lenkt David Hockney seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Bildwelt des Massenkonsums. Er konzipiert einen dreidimensionalen Illusionismus mit deutlich erotischen Anspielungen, 1969 entstehen die Skupturen «Table Sculpture» und «Hat Stand». 1968 bis 1970 ist Allen Jones Gastdozent an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. 1969 hat er eine Gastprofessur an der Abteilung für Malerei der University of South Florida in Tampa. 1970 entwirft er Ausstattung und Kostüme für «0 Calcutta» in London und für die Fernsehproduktion «Männer, wir kommen» des Westdeutschen Rundfunks.
1972 Entwurf der Kostüme für «The Body Show» im ICA, London. 1973 ist Allen Jones Gastdozent an der University of Los Angeles in Irvine. 1974 besucht Allen Jones Japan. 1975 macht er eine Kanada-Tournee. 1976 Entwurf zu Barbet Schroeders Film «Maitresse». 1977 ist er Gastdozent an der Abteilung für Malerei der University of California in Los Angeles, im Sommer Gast-Studienleiter für Malerei und Zeichnen an der Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Kanada. Er entwirft 1978 eine Reklamewand für die Strumpfwarenfabrik «Fogal» am Bahnhof Basel. 1979 hat er in der Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, eine grosse Retrospektive, anschliessend in der Serpentine Gallery, London, in Sunderland, Baden-Baden und Bielefeld. 1982 bis 1983 ist er Gastprofessor an der Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. 1986 wird Allen Jones zum Mitglied der Royal Academy, London, gewählt.
Arbeiten von Allen Jones waren in der Sammlung Gunther Sachs, die 2012 bei Sotheby’s erfolgreich versteigert wurden. GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL bietet Originale, Unikate und Grafiken von Allen Jones an. Die letzte Ausstellung mit Allen Jones bei Galerie Frank Fluegel war 2012 unter dem Titel „75 Years on Stage“.
