James Rosenquist wurde in den 1960er Jahren neben Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg und anderen als führender amerikanischer Pop-Art-Künstler bekannt. Obwohl jeder von ihnen einen eigenen Stil entwickelte, gab es Gemeinsamkeiten in ihren Ansätzen zur Bildgestaltung, die dazu beitrugen, die Pop-Art-Bewegung zu definieren: die Verwendung kommerzieller Kunsttechniken und die Darstellung populärer Bilder und Alltagsgegenstände. Wie bei seinen Zeitgenossen hatte Rosenquists Hintergrund in der Plakatmalerei einen großen Einfluss auf seine beginnende Karriere in der bildenden Kunst und erweiterte die Grenzen seines Mediums in einer Ära, die das Feld der Malerei neu definierte. In seinen Werken testete er die Möglichkeiten der Wahrnehmung, des Bildes und des malerischen Mediums selbst, indem er Figuration, Collage und gefundene Objekte kombinierte, um die Widersprüche der amerikanischen Erfahrung zu vermitteln.
Der 1933 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, geborene Rosenquist studierte Kunst an der University of Minnesota (1952-54), bevor er sich an der Art Students League in New York einschrieb. Außerdem besuchte er die Cedar Tavern, wo er die Maler Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline und Milton Resnick kennenlernte. Er arbeitete als Maler monumentaler Werbetafeln und malte in seiner Freizeit abstrakte Leinwände. 1960 gab er die kommerzielle Malerei auf und richtete sich ein Atelier in Coenties Slip, New York, ein. Durch das Ausschneiden, Fragmentieren und Neueinfärben von Bildern aus Zeitschriften in Verbindung mit den Fertigkeiten und Gesten der Schildermalerei entwickelte Rosenquist eine neue Sprache, die ihn von der zweiten Generation der Abstrakten Expressionisten unterschied und ihn von seinen Kollegen abhob. Mit Techniken aus der Werbung, die der verstorbene amerikanische Kurator Walter Hopps als „visuelle Poesie“ bezeichnete, hat er in seinem Werk Fragen ausgelotet, die vom Ökonomischen, Romantischen und Ökologischen bis hin zum Wissenschaftlichen, Kosmischen und Existenziellen reichen.
Rosenquist schuf über mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte hinweg bahnbrechende Werke und bewies immer wieder seine Meisterschaft in Malerei, Collage, Zeichnung und Druckgrafik. Seine erste Einzelausstellung fand 1962 in der Green Gallery von Richard Bellamy statt, gefolgt von seiner Teilnahme an der Ausstellung Six Painters and the Object im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum im Jahr 1963, die von Lawrence Alloway kuratiert wurde und Werke von Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg und Andy Warhol umfasste. Die 1985 vom Denver Art Museum organisierte Ausstellung James Rosenquist: Paintings 1961-1985 wurde im Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, im Des Moines Art Center, in der Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, im Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, und im National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C., gezeigt. 1991 war seine Ausstellung in der Tretjakow-Galerie, Moskau, eine der ersten Ausstellungen eines amerikanischen Künstlers in Russland seit dem Kalten Krieg. Zwischen 2003 und 2005 wurde sein Werk in einer vom Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, organisierten Retrospektive gezeigt, die in die Menil Collection und das Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, das Guggenheim Museum Bilbao und das Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg reiste. Nach dem Tod des Künstlers im Jahr 2017 wurde sein Werk in der Überblicksausstellung James Rosenquist: Painting as Immersion im Museum Ludwig, Köln, und im ArOS Aarhus Art Museum, Dänemark, gezeigt.
