Allen Jones is a British artist of Pop Art. His works are characterized by a provocative eroticism and are primarily intended to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer. Many works were in the collection of Gunther Sachs.
Few artists are as controversial as the Pop Art pioneer Allen Jones, (艾伦·琼斯) despite his high degree of fame. The British artist has created many iconic works and remains a controversial figure in the art world with a strong international presence.
From 1955 to 1961 he studied painting and lithography at Hornsey College of Art in London. The teaching method is mainly based on Klee’s “Pedagogical Sketchbook”. He travels to Provence and Paris, where he is particularly impressed by Delaunay. In 1959 he visits the Musée Fernand Léger in Biot. Until 1960 he studied at the Royal College of Art together with R. B. Kitaj, Peter Phillips, David Hockney and Derek Boshier. By the end of the academic year he had to leave the college. Between 1961 and 1963 he taught lithography at Croydon College of Art and in 1964 drawing at the Chelsea School of Art.
His work of the early sixties is strongly psychologically oriented, inspired by reading Nietzsche, Freud and Jung. In 1963 he received the Prix des Jeunes Artistes at the Paris Biennale. 1964 he moved to New York. He undertakes an extensive journey through the USA. In New York, David Hockney focused his attention on the visual world of mass consumption. He conceives a three-dimensional illusionism with clearly erotic allusions. In 1969 he creates the sculptures “Table Sculpture” and “Hat Stand”. From 1968 to 1970 he was a guest lecturer at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts. In 1969 he has a guest professorship at the Department of Painting at the University of South Florida in Tampa. In 1970 he designs sets and costumes for “0 Calcutta” in London and for the television production “Männer, wir kommen” (Men, we are coming) for Westdeutscher Rundfunk.
1972 designs costumes for “The Body Show” at the ICA, London. 1973 he is a guest lecturer at the University of Los Angeles in Irvine. 1974 he visits Japan. 1975 he makes a tour of Canada. 1976 Design for Barbet Schroeder’s film “Maitresse”. 1977 he is a guest lecturer at the Department of Painting at the University of California in Los Angeles. In the summer he is a guest study director for painting and drawing at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada. In 1978 he designed an advertising wall for the hosiery factory “Fogal” at Basel railway station. In 1979 he had a major retrospective at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, followed by the Serpentine Gallery, London, in Sunderland, Baden-Baden and Bielefeld. From 1982 to 1983 he was a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. 1986 he is elected member of the Royal Academy, London.
