Alex Katz - Ada (Black & Purple)
Ada (Black & Purple) is a woodblock print by US artist Alex Katz. It shows a portrait of his wife and muse Ada.
Alex Katz is especially famous for his figurative paintings: The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, he was born in New York in 1927. A pioneer of Pop Art, he always focused on the essentials and early on explored simplified forms and high-contrast color composition. His art is diverse, but always has beauty as its central theme. The artist can now look back on more than 200 solo as well as around 500 group exhibitions and numerous prizes; his diverse artworks are part of more than 100 collections and exhibitions worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine. His work contains numerous historical references, from Japanese block printing, Matisse and Monet to Jackson Pollock, Degas and, of course, Pop Art. The influence of Japanese art is especially evident in his landscape paintings. FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE has had the artist Alex Katz in its program with prints and originals from the beginning and has held numerous exhibitions. Among them a solo show at the Art Cologne. Alex Katz was completely underestimated in Europe for a long time. Now that he is over 95 years old, his work is increasingly coming into the focus of collectors. Like Picasso, Katz develops more and more creativity with age and seems unstoppable in creating new works. Always present was his muse and wife Ada Katz. The previous auction record for one of his paintings is over US$ 1 million, still far from the prices of his American colleagues such as Tom Wesselmann or Andy Warhol. In 2023 Alex Katz will have an exhibition at the Albertina in Vienna and at the Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar.
