David Hockney counts among the most important British painters of the present day. He has always been interested in new media and was the first renowned artist to use the iPhone and iPad to create his artwork.
David Hockney, (born 9 July 1937) is a British painter, draughtsman, printmaker, set designer and photographer. A major contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.
Hockney owned a house and a studio in Bridlington and London and two apartment buildings in California, where he has lived alternately since 1964: one in the Hollywood Hills, one in Malibu and an office and archive on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Many series of works were also created in California.
He also became known for his numerous pictures of LA’s swimming pools, including the now very famous works “The Splash” and “Bigger Splash”.
On November 15, 2018, Hockney’s 1972 work Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) was sold at Christie’s auction house in New York City for $90 million (£70 million), making it one of the most expensive paintings by a living artist ever sold at auction.
