Donald Sultan is a leading contemporary artist from the USA who rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the “New Image” movement. He is known for his monumental paintings that characteristically use industrial materials such as tar, putty, and enamel to depict basic geometric and organic elements with a formal minimalism that is both weighty and textured. Sultan is known for his still lifes as well as his “disaster” paintings that focus on themes of industry, war, and man-made disasters. The most popular flower motifs are “Poppies” and “Mimosa”. Throughout his career, he has revisited and reinvented still life with images of lemons, poppies, playing cards, fruits and flowers, and other objects. He is interested in contrasts and explores dichotomies such as beauty and roughness, nature and artificiality, realism and abstraction.
“Painting has often been declared to be dead, and how many times has it shown us that it will never disappear? We call the classic movies ” old movies”, but we never call the masterpieces “old paintings”. Good painting is timeless”
Donald Sultan
Printmaking have been an important part of Sultan’s practice since the 1970s. Among his most important print projects is his aquatint portfolio “Black Lemons,” printed in 1987 and exhibited at MoMA a year later. In 1999, he collaborated with David Mamet on his book Bar Mitzvah, for which he did the drawings. In 2002, Sultan was invited to establish the Visiting Artist Program at the Tyler Print Institute in Singapore, where he created ambitious woodcut and intaglio prints. Other important prints include the screenprints Fruits and Flowers I, II, III; Green Apples with master printer Ken Tyler; Red Roses and Egg; the Smoke Rings series; the Brutal, Unsentimental Landscape series; and the Portfolio of 12 Colors, which is informed by the complex nature of the projects.
A native of Asheville, NC, Sultan studied at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and later received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has since received honorary doctorates from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the New York Academy of Art, and the University of North Carolina. In 2010, Donald Sultan was awarded the North Carolina Award, the highest honor a state can bestow on a civilian. Sultan moved to New York City in 1975.
