Alex Katz / Pioneer of Pop Art
Ulla in Black Hat is a silkscreen print by Alex Katz that has become a classic and must-have piece by the artist. Like Andy Warhol’s Marilyn, Ulla in Black Hat has become an icon. The image is from Alex Katz’s well-known Black Hat series. The lithograph from 2010 is characteristic of the American artist’s portraits: a larger-than-life head—the face shielded by a hat and sunglasses—and the clear, bright colors so typical of Alex Katz, here especially the background in an intensely radiant yellow. The subject is model and actress Ulla van Zeller. Alex Katz is particularly famous for his figurative paintings: the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, he was born in New York in 1927. As a pioneer of Pop Art, he always focused on the essentials and explored simplified forms and contrasting color compositions early on. His art is diverse, but always has beauty as its central theme. The artist can now look back on more than 200 solo and around 500 group exhibitions; his diverse works are part of over 100 collections worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine.
