Peter Doig - Zermatt D1-6 Holy Mountain.

Peter Doig Zermatt D1-6 Holy Mountain is a print based on the “Zermatt” paintings from 2020 and 2021. Each print is framed in oak with Optium Tru Vue acrylic. The “Zermatt” collection is Peter Doig’s first return to snowy landscapes since the 1990s and also Doig’s first thematic group of works.

The series was created in 2018 when Swiss architect and artist Heinz Julen offered Peter Doig his chalet in the idyllic resort as artistic inspiration to paint his surroundings. Compositionally and conceptually, Doig was inspired by ski posters designed to attract people to the mountains. The images, which feature a balance of dynamic skiers and majestic, snow-covered landscapes, are simple but enticing and prompted Doig to produce his own series of painted posters. As such, “Zermatt” joins Doig’s history of poster design, which includes posters for his Studio Film Club in Trinidad.

Peter Doig draws largely on his memories to create his Zermatt images, which are based on his experiences in Zermatt, drawing on a range of inspirations – from the strong religious tradition of the resort and the dangerous nature of its landscape to memories of skiing and commuting to the slopes. His view of the resort was undeniably influenced by Derek Walcott’s descriptions of Zermatt in his generative poetry series “The Prodigal” (2006). The series consists of six “Zermatt” paintings, which Doig considered the most “poster-like” in size and appearance, have been translated here into facsimile prints. Originally conceived as a series of painted posters on paper, the “Zermatt” paintings take on a new dimension as prints by being put into the format that inspired them, becoming, as Doig calls them, “art posters.”
