Jon Key - Mary x The Man

Mary x The Man is a screenprint by Jon Key. This limited edition work is part of Jon Key’s latest series of works exploring the ancestry and history of his identity through intersecting themes: southernness, blackness, queerness, and family. Screen printing is a medium perfectly suited to the artist’s graphic style, where flat planes of bodies intersect with bold patterns. Each of the prints has small hand-painted areas added by the artist to add a tactile element to their otherwise flat, mechanical nature, creating a closer relationship to the oil and acrylic paintings in the exhibition. Drawing on design history and principles, Key’s distorted, hard-edged figures are interspersed with family histories, reflected in polka dots and plaids on the surface of his works. In opaque interior and exterior environments that conceal American histories of pain and oppression, Key layers stories of queer ancestry and archival emphemera and artifacts that offer glimpses of strength, support, and resilience.

What certainly makes the work very special is the extremely low edition of only four copies. In addition, details such as the red dots or the white dots in the eyes are painted by hand in ink.
