David Shrigley - 'I'm Fine'

A stark contrast of mood and imagery defines this screen print. A dark blue figure emerges against a void of white. The form is simple. The expression is serene. A gentle smile suggests a deceptive calm.
Above the head sits a lit fuse. A spark of yellow and orange signals an imminent explosion. This tension creates a powerful visual irony. The figure represents a fragile stability on the verge of collapse.
The handwritten red text adds a layer of biting sarcasm. It mocks the social conventions of polite conversation. The phrasing masks inner turmoil with a casual greeting. This juxtaposition is a hallmark of the creator’s absurdist approach.
The aesthetic is intentionally naive. Bold brushstrokes give the artwork a raw, immediate quality. It bridges the gap between high art and graphic satire. The piece serves as a poignant commentary on modern anxiety and the performance of wellness.
This 2025 piece utilizes a limited palette to maximize emotional impact. Deep indigo dominates the composition. A single flash of brightness marks the point of combustion.

Looking ahead, Shrigley will present a highly anticipated exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London from May 25, 2027, through September 5, 2027. This major exhibition marks his first public solo show in a British museum since 2012 and will feature brand-new works and commissioned pieces designed to establish an artistic dialogue with 17th-century Dutch and Flemish masterpieces by legendary artists such as Rembrandt and Jan Steen. This upcoming exhibition follows a series of successful solo exhibitions he has recently presented throughout Europe. In early 2026, his humorous and thought-provoking exhibition titled “What the Hell Was I Thinking?” drew large crowds to the Kunsthal Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where it successfully concluded on May 3, 2026. Prior to that, his whimsical and satirical exhibition “Exhibition of Old Rope” was on view at the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London, where it concluded at the start of the year on January 17, 2026. Together, these exhibitions underscore Shrigley’s enduring influence and his active presence in the world of contemporary art.
