White Shirt is a portfolio of six artworks by US artist Alex Katz. The motif of the young man in the white shirt appears several times in the artist’s œuvre. Now, for the first time, a portfolio of prints featuring the motif has been published. The meaning of the color white runs through our lives, it is the immaculate sign of purity. White is the symbol of truth, unadulterated by dishonesty. White can blind those who are accustomed to darkness, and it can illuminate the literal and figurative evils of society. White is the contrast against which all other colors appear more vivid. White is clean, simple and pure. It contrasts with black, and its meaning is clear. Since white light contains all the colors of the spectrum, it is a comprehensive color that neither favors nor excludes any single hue.

Alex Katz / Pioneer of Pop Art

Alex Katz is particularly famous for his figurative paintings: The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in New York in 1927. A pioneer of Pop Art, he always focused on the essentials and early on explored simplified forms and high-contrast color composition. His art is diverse, but always has beauty as its central theme. The artist can now look back on more than 200 solo exhibitions as well as around 500 group exhibitions; his diverse works are part of more than 100 collections worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine.
