Light is what holds my paintings together”, says the artist Alex Katz, “when I finally get the light right, it reaches the unconscious”. Large-format landscapes inspired by flowers and trees show the view from outside his studio in Maine.

Charged with the elegiac poetry of immediacy, his paintings stimulate reflection on the convergence of perception and consciousness, on the relationship between art and nature, and on the notion of the sublime of the moment. Katz’s landscapes represent the pinnacle of contemporary art’s ability to grasp the greatness of the present. The capture of the moment is one of the core themes in his entire oeuvre. They allude to the state of being in a time in which the incessant flow of images in our lives often leads us to detach ourselves from the circumstances of life, from the reality so accurately portrayed by Alex Katz.

The artist has always been fascinated by trees and abstract works of art that only show details such as branches and leaves. For this reason, he is currently creating the comprehensive “Autumn” series, which began in 2023 with the artwork “Autumn 4” and will continue in 2024 with Autumn 1-3 and Spring.

Alex Katz is especially famous for his figurative paintings: The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in New York in 1927. As a pioneer of Pop Art, he always concentrated on the essentials and early on, he dealt with simplified forms and contrasting color compositions. His art is diverse, but always has beauty as its central theme. The artist can now look back on more than 200 solo and around 500 group exhibitions; his diverse works are part of over 100 collections worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine.
