Memories of the 1950s
Isca Greenfield-Sanders shows the American landscape as experienced by the artist through found amateur photographs from the 1950s and 1960s. She uses these vintage photographs as a template from which to create her artwork. Over the past 20 years, Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant and beautifully composed paintings and watercolors have combined photography with watercolor and oil to create artwork that speaks of “how memories are approximations, stories we shape and retell.” Often executed with multiple studies, her multi-layered paintings are constructed much like human memory, through repeated recitation of a chosen narrative. The artist continues to explore outdoor scenes of bathers and beach walkers. She writes, “The unification of the disparate images that came to me from many different sources was a matter of taste and was achieved primarily with watercolor. The inclusion of figures grounds these compositions in the human experience, but the scale of the scene to the figure shifts the focus away from the human drama and instead emphasizes the monumentality of the landscape.”
