Bibi Lei was born in Macau and is a Portuguese-Chinese artist living in Tokyo. She enjoys painting and taking care of her 4-year-old daughter. She describes herself as a childlike soul who never grows old. She paints mainly with her fingers to express her free will and purity. Her works have the common element of an original character who acts more like a superhero – she is brave and explores the unknown world of fantasy in the world Lei created for her. Dreamy, colorful, childlike, love, hope and joy are the words that describe Bibi Lei’s art. Her art focuses on the expression of colors as they exist in her mesmerizing art universe – intuitively she sees a colorful world full of good purity and wonder. In October 2021, she held another solo exhibition in collaboration with Caran d’Ache Ginza Japan, titled “Is the World Still Bibi.” First, she introduced a girl figure that is a combination of her and her daughter. Bibi combines her intuitive, childlike form of hand painting with traditional brushes. She began painting on larger canvases. She creates a colorful world with a distinctive color combination and textures. The girl in her paintings is always fearless and appreciates being in a scene of her own making, filling the canvas with color and happiness. She is the rebellion against the darkness. Bibi Lei believes in her childlike intuition and bold style. Her choice of colors depends a lot on her mood. Each of her artworks should be completed quickly and with concentrated energy, just like children playing on the playground. She paints daily and usually completes a work in one to two days.
